Star Blazers (a.k.a. Space Cruiser Yamato) was a laserdisc game manufactured by Taito Corporation in 1985. It is based on the anime series of the same name, which was popular in Japan and in many other countries as well.
According to an article in www.starblazers.com (read it here), this was Taito's second LD game after Ninja Hayate. Star Blazers uses footage from the full motion lenght movie 'Final Yamato'. It also uses original animation created solely for the purpose of this laserdisc game.

The gameplay is a hybrid of different laserdisc genres. It is mainly a collection of firing stages similar to Astron Belt and Cobra Command. It also has action sequences similar to those found in games like Ninja Hayate or Dragon's Lair. Similar to Taito's other laserdisc efforts (Time Gal and Ninja Hayate), Star Blazers was never released outside Japan.
